SCULPTURE
“Functional Objects I + II” are the re-imagination of discarded materials transformed from something that once functioned for art-objects into art-objects. These works play with interpretation of an art object – How should they really be interacted with? By discarding a material object, you are discarding the meaning. Claiming thrown away material as your own, allows the potential the new user wants it to have while maintaining the old use. “Functional Objects” have the potential to be anything and to be re-imagined by whoever acquires their material. I use them in such a way that they don’t get thrown away once they have served their purpose and respects what they once were. The transformation from an object for art, to art is enhanced by the time and labour applied by myself to make them. Within these art-objects I question their use-value and their re-imagined use-value for the next person to come.
Re-imagining “Limits” in an aesthetic sculptural way so they could be interacted with meant experimenting with structures and materials to make a form that undulated in the same way the drawing did. Using slice-forms I was able to construct “Giant Spheres”. For this I have used old walls and off-cuts of materials to construct them, this takes on a new life for the material and re-positions it’s meaning while maintaining a connection with the initial thought behind it.
